When we moved into our present home 18 months ago we knew we couldn't spend much on our kitchen but could do a mini-makeover. Below shows a before pic. The armoire is sitting in the far end back wall .
Another view, the appliances, flooring and counter tops were only year old and the cupboards were still in pretty good shape. Some of the pics are a little dark, sorry about that.
First order was the curtains and paint. We painted the walls a combo of cotswold green and a soft patina from the Laura Ashley/cotswold stone collection. The curtains I ordered from J.C. Penneys.
I painted the old bench off white and made a cushion and some pillows.
We changed out the light over the dining area and added a more old fashioned looking one. Another big project was getting rid of the ugly faucet and replacing it with a rubbed bronze one. I'm lucky that hubby can do electrical and plumbing work too. In the 11 years we've been married, we've never had to call one.
We changed the other light in the kitchen area, it had been a big ugly fluorescent one. We found some white knobs and pulls for the cupboards which were fairly inexpensive but seemed to add a lot.
A closer view of the paint color.
One of my favorite things was the back splash my hubby did behind the stove, and on this side of the kitchen. Its a copper color and I really like the vintage look it adds. They are panels that you buy at Home Depot etc. but then they need to be cut and placed together in a match up pattern, kind of like hanging wallpaper.
Another view of the back splash and knobs and pulls.
Just recently we painted the other back splash with a tea leaf color and hubby added a few of the strips he had left from the other side.

Cindy, your kitchen is charming. I like it that you are do-it-yourselfers, like us! A lot of satisfaction with that. The faucet, backsplash and fixture look so pretty - and the armoire - wow! Linda
ReplyDeleteHi Cindy
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen is cottage cozy!!!! I love the backsplash. It was something I was considering using for my kitchen backsplash but I was worried about how the heat from my cooktop would affect it. The wainscotting and curtains really warm things up and the color you chose for the bench was perfect. Everything is just beautiful. I would love to come and share a cup of coffee there with you. Hey I can bring my mug! Have a blessed Sunday! Hugs, Loreta
This is such a wonderful makeover! If you didn't tell anyone that you spent less than $500, they would never believe it! I love the colors you chose. And I really like the backsplash, that's what we are planning on using when we do Mom's kitchen makeover. Kathy
ReplyDeleteWow, This is beautiful! You muxt love spending time in there...it is so restful looking. Nice job and you are lucky to have a very handy hubby!
ReplyDeleteI love everything about your kitchen! I've looked at those curtains many times at Penney's but don't have the right room/decor for them until I re-do something. Drawer pulls and knobs can make a big difference and yours look great. Good job!
ReplyDeleteThat is a great redo. I really need to do something to mine. Thanks for sharing.

Oh Cindy I am sorry to tell you that the rooster on your window sill by the sink really doesn't go there.Lol.
ReplyDeleteTell you what, I will take it off your hands for you so you don't have to try to find a place for it. No, no I insist. I don't mind a bit. Listen lady send me the darned rooster! I love it.
You guys have really made great changes in this area. Pats on the back and high fives all around.
Just beautiful, warm, welcoming, inviting country kitchen! All it needs now is you sitting there, enjoying a delicious cup of tea! (or coffee, of course!)It's so nice to know what you can do with a small amount of money and some creative imagination. Thanks for sharing your lovely kitchen!
ReplyDeleteLove the tin back splash! The apples are wonderful! I take the bench! lol Love cozy kitchen! Armoire be still my heart!
ReplyDeleteHey Cindy, I loved this post the first time 'round, and love it just as much -- maybe more! -- the second. LOVE the wall color --it's a real COLOR -- but it "reads" like a neutral. I think you could put anything with it.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the backsplach -- we used it in our last house, LOVED it, and it held up well, too.
Cass

Hello Dearheart...
ReplyDeleteOh boy...now I'm sounding like you...it's 2:30am and I can't sleep! So here I am! I'll tiptoe so I won't wake you, Girlfriend! hehe!
Cindy...I just adore your kitchen...I love the layout and the beautiful cabinetry! Girl, you couldn't have picked a prettier wall color...I was noticing that it really pulls out that pretty green in the wall paper border up in your tray ceiling! Really beautiful!!! I love all the changes and updates that you and Mike made! One of my favorite changes was the pretty vintage copper backsplash!!! I was just looking at that yesterday at Home Depot...sure would love to do that in my kitchen when we remodel! Ohhh yes...couldn't help but notice your pretty white dishes on the counter...love those canisters!!! You guys really did a fabulous job with everything...and yes, it's so nice to have a hubby that can do all that! I'm pretty blessed in that area as well...Russell built our entire house...top to bottom...electrical, plumbing, etc! You can do so much more with the amount of money you have when you're cutting out the costs of labor!

Cindy, I love your kitchen! I cannot believe what a dramatic difference $500 worth of changes and a very handy husband can make. That backsplash is just about the coolest thing I've seen! Those cabinet pulls made a huge difference. The re-done kitchen looks like it belongs in Appelstone Cottage. laurie
