My Mom's Metlox Poppytrail on a Sizzling Day!

Hi All!
All week I have been trying to get a post together and it just hasn't been working for me!
We've had record breaking heat with a high of 100 degrees yesterday, in the 90's today and only a high of 69 tomorrow!
That's Wisconsin for you!
When I talked to my son yesterday who lives in Phoenix we were hotter than they were.
The table I'm sharing today is near and dear to my heart.  These dishes belong to my Mom.
They are Metlox Poppytrail in Blue.

My Mom purchased them when I was a little girl.  And the neat part is that she bought them with green stamps!  Does anyone else remember their Mom's using green stamps?  My Mother would save and save and then we would make a trip to the Green Stamp Store.  I would always go with her and I remember being as excited as she was to see what her stamps would purchase.

I remember very clearly the day she bought these!  I think I was 9 or 10 years old and my Mom was able to buy a complete set.  Sadly, over the years some chipped and some broke so she is down to 5 dinner plates, two cups, and various smaller plates etc.

Here are the cups....I just love the shape of them.

So I have decided to start searching for pieces and help her get her collection back up to par!

The place-mats were purchased at Wal-Mart last summer on clearance for .50 a piece!
I bought them to use on our picnic table but thought they might work well today.

I just purchased the creamer and sugar bowl on E-Bay.  I haven't told my Mom yet but I think she will be pleased!  The creamer and sugar bowl were $11.00 plus $5.00 in shipping.  Not bad, prices seem to vary a lot so I will be spending a bit of time searching I do believe.

I think these are actually little dessert plates.

The dinner plates!  What I love is the Americana look to them.  And since they were actually made in America, even more Americana!  A little history about Metlox.  They were a California company that produced china from the 1930's to about the early 1970's.  There are so many neat patterns, a lot of them have a raised pattern and they are really quite lovely.  Just type Metlox into the E-
Bay search engine and you will be surprised at the variety of patterns.

The napkin rings are also my Mom's!

And in keeping with the blue theme!  Little Addison just turned 8 months!  She is crawling up a storm and generally into most everything!

She is so much fun and she cuts into my blogging time but I love babysitting for her and wouldn't have it any other way!

So what's up in your neck of the woods?
Cindy

I am joining Susan @ Between Naps on the Porch for Tablescape Thursday.

I remember my Mom taking me to the green stamp store when I was a little girl! I hadn't thought of that in years. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. It brought a smile to my face! Yes I too remember My Mom saving those green stamps and the Top Value stamps. I was the one that licked them to put into those little books. I still have some things My Mom got with them too.

The little one is growing so much and she is sooooo cute.

  11. That dinnerware is wonderful! I've never seen the pattern before; nor heard of the company - but, wow - I'm really liking it! Good luck finding pieces for your mom - what a special gift that will be. I vaguely remember green stamps - remember the stamps and licking them in a book - but I don't remember a store or ever getting anything with them - perhaps we never saved enough...Rats! Anywhohow - was warm here too today - but tomorrow we're only supposed to be in the 50's....Brrr....Your little Addison is a living, breathing, DOLL!!! What - did you color coordinate her for this photo shoot??? Love it! Smiles & Hugs ~ Robin

  13. Cindy- First off -she is a doll! I can't believe how big she is getting!

I certainly do remember green stamps...and licking them to put into books and double checking every page so that we wouldn't miss and have a blank page when we got there. My mother usually purchased an appliance with hers...a mixer one time and I remember bowls another time...and an electric can opener...OH MY!
There was a great big bill board on the way to one of our small towns that said Jesus Saves and one night someone crawled up there and wrote the words Green Stamps under it...Jesus Saves Green Stamps. It stayed tha way for years~ amidst much tsk-tsking...but no one thought to "FIX IT"..lol

Hope your day is cooler tomorrow. that is what they are saying on this side of the state!xo Diana

  15. The Metlox Poppytrail is wonderful! I definitely remember pasting the green stamps in those little booklets and studying the catalog to choose what we wanted and make sure that we had enough stamps to trade. When mama passed away, we found unused full books stored in a desk drawer. What memories. Thank you for sharing your beautiful design. Cherry Kay

  18. I love the plates, love the vintage look to them, they look like pottery. I am glad you are finding pieces to complete the set. How cute Addison is in her matching outfit. She always has the prettiest smile. I cannot wait for my grandkids to arrive. Tomorrow, AJ come with her parents and the next day Tina comes with her 2 boys and hubby. Today I have to clean the yard cause we had a strong gust of wind yesterday that toppled everything in the backyard including the new arbor inthe secret garden. Ugh!! I thought I was done with my prep and can just relax....Christine

  19. They are so pretty! And so is dgd!

I remember green stamps. We used to get them at the gas station. I still have a wicker picnic basket I got with them when we got married, 41 yrs ago. They stopped giving them out shortly after that, here anyway!

Those are beautiful Cindy, and I'm sure she's proud to know you use them : )
Addison is 8 months already? WOW She's such a sweet pea.
Your having weird weather. I didn't know Wisconsin was like that?
It's been hot and humid and probably reached 90 yesterday. Then around 5pm we had a terrible hail storm... so weird so scary. All is well today. Lot's going on outside, but I'm staying inside today and changing things around again : )
    Stay cool Cindy girl.
    Love Claudie

  24. What charming dishes...I just love them. And,yes, I remember well my mama saving green stamps. I saved them too when we first got married. I think I actually still have a few somewhere! Can you believe that??? We have had about 19 straight days with heat in the high 90's and a few days of 100-
    103. We usually don't get that hot until August. We've been more than a month without significant rainfall and we're dry as a bone. Addison is certainly one cute, sassly little girl...love the red headband!

  27. Have never seen that pattern...it is lovely. I think your little blue and white accessory in the last couple pictures really makes the tablesetting complete. Too cute.

  28. Cindy this is absolutely wonderful! I love the dishes and I do remember Green Stamps!

Addison is beautiful. She always has a big ol' smile.

  29. I licked many green stamps to stick them in the book, and I loved going to the S & H store to redeem them. I don't think we ever got anything as neat as your Mother's china. What a great idea to start replacing it for her. I'll keep my eyes open for a bargain on some. It's such a charming pattern. Addison is absolutely the cutest thing in that pretty blue and white dress. Just looking at her makes me want to squeeze her. Sounds like she doesn't stay still long enough to do that any more though. laurie
