Mad Town Week-end and Frank Lloyd Wright's Monona Terrace!

On Saturday, hubby and I headed 2 hours south to one of our favorite towns Madison, Wisconsin. We went to shop the farmers market and just get away for a day.

This outstanding farmers market is held on the sidewalks outside our state capital.

It was very crowded and so I didn't get a lot of pics but it was a beautiful summer like day.

On Sunday morning we headed over to tour Monona Terrace.  Monona Terrace was  designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, probably the most well known American architect.  Wright was born on June 8th, 1867 in Richland Center, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison and first presented his vision and design of Monona Terrace to the city of Madison in 1938.

In 2002,  43 years after his death, his vision was realized with the completion of Monona Terrace.
Monona Terrace links the shimmering waters of Lake Monona to the State Capital.  It spans 90 feet out over Lake Monona.  (The pic above and the one below are  from their website)

It truly is an amazing place!   Look at that view of Lake Monona!

A breathtaking design that leaves you in awe of his genius.

And the view of the lake keeps drawing you in.

There are 5 or 6 levels with the rear side facing the capital building.

Street level to.................

an upper level that features an open air café.

It was early Sunday morning and nothing had opened yet but it was nice to have it mostly to ourselves.

Gardens and views!

A truly amazing place!
If you are ever in Madison, make sure to check it out.
On another note, our average high temp for this time of year is mid to upper 70's.   We are supposed to reach 94 degrees today with a heat index of 100!   My son and dil are flying into Wisconsin from Phoenix tomorrow.  I  think they thought they would get to escape the heat.   And their not used to this kind of humidity anymore so it may be a bit of a shocker.   On the bright side, my plants are loving the humidity!
Take care everyone and have a nice week!

Cindy

I am linking this post to Blue Monday with Smiling Sally  and

Outdoor Wednesday with Susan at a Southern Day Dreamer.

Thanks Ladies!

  1. This was such fun to see, Cindy! I'm a fan of FLW architecture, and the man himself was fascinating. That is an amazing building with quite a view.

I've never been to Wisconsin, but my grandfather was apparently born there in 1861, and the family moved shortly thereafter. Can you believe that date? Yes, we skip some generations in our family as people had children when they were OLD. LOL!

Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed the tour, and the capital building is beautiful, too.

  6. Oh Cindy, I've been thinking of your son and DIL, as I'm sure they were thinking cooler weather. Well, it's gorgeous here and hot there. Who knew!
But I know they will have a fabulous time with all of you.

  7. Hello there! Madison is one of my favorite cities and your photos are amazing. Right around the corner from where I used to work in Minneapolis sits a Frank Lloyd Wright home. I would drive or walk past it as often as I could. Pure magic! It's cold here right now in Bend, low's in high 20's ... high's barely 50! Send me some heat, please!

  10. Cindy, the Monona Terrace buildings are fabulous. I am a fan of FLWs buildings, and attended graduate school in Madison, but before this was built. Your heat wave sounds huge, but the corn probably likes it.

  13. What an amazing story! He pitched the idea in 1938 at age 71 and it wasn't built for another 64 years, that's goose-bump stuff! Thanks for sharing, Happy Blue Monday <3

Too bad Frank Lloyd Wright didnt live to see his vision become a reality. It is stunning.

Pour some cold lemonade and keep cool! It's in the 90's here today too. Whew.

  49. That is my kind of day! I love going to Farmer's Markets (we don't have one here) and the tour of Monona Terrace was wonderful. We've seen several Frank Lloyd Wright buildings and they are all very unique.

Thanks for the kind words about my mom. It has really been a blow, but I honestly feel better knowing she is no longer stuck in a body that had simply quit working. Her funeral was just Tuesday, so the past 2 days have just been "let down" days. It still doesn't seem quite real. I do know it is the hardest thing I have ever done.

  50. Oh Cindy, when you come out again, we will definitely go to this fabric store. You will need to ship home or bring another suitcase. This place is so much fun. It always takes me hours to go through there and then I carry bolts of fabric around in a cart. They have huge tables where you can spread them all out and then go back and find more. It is so much fun. We will have a ball. Hope you are coming out this fall. Not in the summer. You will just melt. Hugs, Marty

  51. What beautiful architecture! Too funny about the weather. We should be in the 80 or 90's and we've been in the 60' and 70's with rain! We had record lows in California last weekend!

In return, I hope that you and yours have a very Happy Memorial Day! I'm taking a brief blog break and in so brief you won't know I'm gone, and I wanted to make sure I wished you that ahead of time.

    Sending you love, too...
