This past week-end, hubby and I took a little jaunt to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St.Paul. It's an easy 2 hour drive for us and one of our all time favorite cities to visit. Both cities are on the Mississippi and with our recent warm weather, the river is quite high and roaring.
This area of the river in downtown Minneapolis is known as St. Anthony Falls. Known as the Mill District during the 1800's because of all the Flour Mills along this stretch of the River.
Many of the old buildings are gone. Above is one that is still in fairly good condition. A museum is housed inside this one.
In 2001 they began work on a park where the old flour mills once stood . They excavated underground to the tunnels and stone that were left largely untouched.
Here is a partial view from the walkway above.
Hubby checking it out.
Above St. Anthony Falls is the Stone Arch Bridge. Built around the turn of the century when Minneapolis had more flour mills than any other place in our country.
I loved this old stone bridge!
And along here, as winter gives way to spring,....
The Mighty Mississippi roars!
I am joining Susan @ A Southern Daydreamer for Outdoor Wednesday.
Have a great Wednesday !
What gorgeous scenery! I love the sound of rushing water.

I rode up that way with Hubby on my birthday one year when we still owned a semi company and toured the Mall of America. The Twin Cities are a cool place to visit.
ReplyDeleteYa'll have a wonderfully blessed evening!
We've followed the Mississippi almost all the way to the very tippy top where they say you can step over it. Wish we had traveled that last little bit of 60 miles. It really widens as it flows south. I've followed the river to LA, so wish we had gone on up to the beginning. We live 14 miles west of the Mississippi.
ReplyDeleteIt was out of it's banks and on the cobblestones at St Louis last week. The Missouri River meets the Mississippi in St Louis. The Missouri was up last week, too.
J's French ancestor traveled up to St Louis, on the Mississippi, when he landed in America 200 years ago.
Great photos Cindy!! Loved this post.
I hope someday i can go to that place. i am from Indonesia and like adventure.

ReplyDeleteCindy, your photos are beautiful! That stone bridge is so pretty. I can't believe it is still standing with the river rushing that way. The part of the Miss. River I live on never looks that way. So interesting to see another part of the river that looks so completely different. laurie
ReplyDeleteWow, gorgeous photos. The river looks so powerful roaring over the spillways. It is nice to see some history being preserved...too soom it will all be gone.

Hi Cindy! Oh, so beautiful! I'm familiar with the old Miss from the south, so this is great to see her at another spot!

A very interesting post! I liked seeing the old flour mill and the Mississippi is impressive anytime!
ReplyDeleteI've never been to Minneapolis except for transferring plans at the airport. From Milwaukee, it's a much lover drive. I really enjoyed the Mill Ruins tour and I didn't know that they once were the flour mill capital of the world. That is some roaring water!
ReplyDeleteWow! Great post, Cindy! I've only seen it at the New Orleans end, where it is very wide and lazy! Happy weekend!...hugs,...Debbie
